Metropolitan YMCA (MYMCA) leads positive community transformation with a special focus on children and youths. We nurture our children and work with our youth to identify their aspirations and amplify their efforts to reach the community for positive transformation.
Apart from our community and youth impact efforts, we are also a social enterprise, providing affordable F&B and hospitality services. All net surpluses from our F&B and hospitality businesses contribute to our M. Y programmes which reach out to impact the community positively.
The first YMCA was set-up by a group of youths led by George Williams in 1844 London to counter social ills resulting from the Industrial Revolution.
Likewise, in post-war Singapore, Dr Chen Su Lan, a medical practitioner who fought the wide-spread use of opium, saw the need for youths to be engaged in wholesome activities. He formed the Chinese YMCA in 1946, catering to the Chinese-speaking community which made up more than 75% of the resident population in Singapore.
The Chinese YMCA offered skills, vocational and recreation courses and attracted wide support from the community.
In 1974, the Chinese YMCA changed its name to Metropolitan YMCA and set up a new building for headquarters at 60 Stevens Road largely through the generous support of the Lee Foundation and Shaw Foundation.
